Uses

This medication is a female hormone. It is used to treat amenorrhea (lack of menstrual flow), abnormal bleeding from the uterus, or endometriosis (a painful condition where the lining of the uterus is abnormal). It is also used to treat certain types of cancer.

Active Ingredients: Norethisterone

Inactive Ingredients: Lactose, magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.

Dosage and Forms

Norethisterone is available in form of tablets.

You should ask your personal health care provider to tell you the proper dose of Norethisterone that you should take in, in order to get the best results from your intake of this medicine. The correct dosage form of this drug can and sometimes does vary from one patient to another. The average dose of Norethisterone regularly consists of one 5 mg pill that should be taken once per day, each day. It is recommended that you should take your doses at the same approximate hour each day.You must not stop your treatment with this medicine without first consulting it with your personal physician.

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and dizziness.

Contraindications and Precautions

Hypersensitivity to Norethisterone or any component of the formulation; thromboembolic disorders; severe hepatic disease; breast cancer; undiagnosed vaginal bleeding; pregnancy.

Use of any progestin during the first 4 months of pregnancy is not recommended. Discontinue if sudden partial or complete loss of vision, proptosis, diplopia, or migraine occur. There is a higher rate of failure with progestin only contraceptives. Progestin-induced withdrawal bleeding occurs within 3-7 days after discontinuation of drug. Use with caution in patients with asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder, hyperlipidemias, migraine, cardiac or renal dysfunction, or psychic depression.

Side Effects

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting; changes in menstrual flow; enlarged or tender breasts; upset stomach; weight changes; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; acne; growth of hair on face.

Interactions

Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove norethindrone from your body (such as rifampin, St. John's wort, azole antifungals including itraconazole, certain anti-seizure medicines including carbamazepine/phenobarbital/phenytoin).

This medication can affect the results of certain lab tests. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor first.
