Generic Name: Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide Other Brand/Trade Names: Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide is marketed under many trade names around the world, including: Hyzaar UsesLosartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of stroke in people with hypertension. This medicine has been used to lower the risk of strokes in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. Active Ingredients: losartan potassium, hydrochlorothiazide Inactive Ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, lactose hydrous, pregelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, titanium dioxide. Dosage and FormsThe recommended dose of Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide is 1 or 2 tablets once daily. The maximum dose is 2 tablets per day. The medication can be taken with or without food, but should be taken consistently with respect to food intake. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor. It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include fast or slow heartbeat, feeling light-headed, or fainting. Contraindications and PrecautionsDon't take Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide if you have ever had an allergic reaction to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfa drugs. You should not take Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide if you are unable to urinate. Side EffectsYou may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred vision, or a stuffy nose as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusual thirst, weakness, confusion, fast heartbeat, fainting, decreased sexual ability. InteractionsIf Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before taking Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide with the following: Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and secobarbital; Cholestyramine; Colestipol; Corticosteroids; Diuretics that leave potassium in the body, such as amiloride, spironolactone, and triamterene; Indomethacin; Insulin; Ketoconazole; Lithium; Narcotic painkillers such as codeine, meperidine, and oxycodone; Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen; Other blood pressure-lowering drugs such as atenolol and nifedipine; Oral diabetes drugs such as chlorpropamide, glipizide, and glyburide; Potassium supplements; Salt substitutes containing potassium; Sulfaphenazole; Troleandomycin Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide may increase the effects of alcohol. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. |
