Uses

Atorvastatin is used in treating of high cholesterol and also to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other heart complications in people with coronary heart disease or type II diabetes.

Active Ingredients: Atorvastatin calcium
Inactive Ingredients: calcium carbonate, USP; candelilla wax, FCC; croscarmellose sodium, NF; hydroxypropyl cellulose, NF; lactose monohydrate, NF; magnesium stearate, NF; microcrystalline cellulose, NF; Opadry White YS-1-7040 (hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, talc, titanium dioxide); polysorbate 80, NF; simethicone emulsion.

Dosage and Forms

Atorvastatin can be found in form of pills.
Take Atorvastatin pills by mouth with full glass of water or with food as schedulled by your doctor. You may crush or crew the pill if swallowing it is troublesome.
Symptoms of Atorvastatin overdose may include the following: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, hypotension, dehydration, weakness. If the overdose is suspected contact your doctor or emergency room immediately.

Contraindications and Precautions

Atorvastatin should be avoided by patients who have low blood pressure, a serious infection, or a history of seizures, metabolism, hormonal, or electrolyte problems, a history of liver problems or alcohol abuse, have recently had major surgery, a serious injury, or a stroke; women who plan to become pregnant.

Side Effects

Atorvastatin may cause the following side effects: mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, stomach pain or upset, constipation, bloating, gas, stuffy nose, itching, skin rash, muscle pain, weakness with fever or flu symptoms.

Interactions

Atorvastatin should be avoided to be taken along with the following: Antacids,Clofibrate, Colestipol, Cyclosporine, Digoxin, Drugs that suppress the immune system, Erythromycin, Fenofibrate, Fluconazole, Gemfibrozil, Itraconazole, Ketoconazole, Niacin, Oral contraceptives.
Note that grapefruit or grapefruit juice may increase the risk of side effects from Atorvastatin .
