Tamiflu

Uses

Tamiflu is a drug used to treat infections caused by two of the most common flu viruses. Tamiflu may decrease the length of time you experience symptoms of the flu by 1—2 days. Tamiflu may also help to reduce the risk of spreading the flu to others.

Active Ingredients: Oseltamivir

Dosage and Forms

Tamiflu is available in form of capsules and powder for oral suspension.

Take this medication as soon as flu symptoms appear or as soon as possible after you have been exposed to the flu. The usual adult dosage for treatment of influenza is 75 mg twice daily for 5 days, beginning within 2 days of the appearance of symptoms and with decreased doses for children and patients with renal impairment. Tamiflu may be given as a preventive measure either during a community outbreak or following close contact with an infected individual. Standard prophylactic dosage is 75 mg once daily for patients aged 13 and older, which has been shown to be safe and effective for up to six weeks.

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea and vomiting.

Contraindications and Precautions

Before taking Tamiflu, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney disease.

This drug may make you dizzy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.

Side Effects

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms call your doctor immediately:

• rash, hives, or blisters on the skin
• itching
• swelling of the face or tongue
• difficulty breathing or swallowing
• hoarseness

Interactions

There are no known interactions between Tamiflu and other drugs. Tamiflu does not interact with the flu vaccine. Therefore, vaccinated individuals can use Tamiflu and vice versa. Before using this medication, tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use specially of: clopidogrel.

Additional Information

The use of Tamiflu in nursing mothers has not been evaluated. Tamiflu is not recommended for post-exposure prophylaxis in healthy people up to age 65 years.
