Uses

Acyclovir is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses. Illnesses caused by herpes viruses include genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chicken pox.
Acyclovir may also be used for other purposes. Check with your doctor before starting using this medicine.

Active Ingredients: acyclovir
Inactive Ingredients: magnesium stearate, corn starch, lactose and sodium lauryl sulfate.

Dosage and Forms

Acyclovir is supplied in capsules and tablets of 200mg, 400mg and 800 mg.
You should begin treatment with Acyclovir as soon as possible after the first symptoms such as tingling, burning, blisters. You can take Acyclovir with or without food. Acyclovir is excreted mainly by the kidney and dosages need to be reduced in patients with kidney dysfunction. Take Acyclovir exactly as the doctor prescribed, if you don't understand these directions consult you healthcare provider.
Acyclovir is generally safe. However, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

Contraindications and Precautions

You should not take Acyclovir is you have ever had an allergic reaction to any ingredients of Acyclovir or similar drugs. Tell you doctor about any drug reactions you have experienced.
If you are being treated for a kidney disorder, consult your doctor before taking Acyclovir. The drug has been known to cause kidney failure.

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: pain in your lower back; urinating less than usual or not at all; easy bruising or bleeding; or unusual weakness.

Interactions

Before taking Acyclovir, tell your doctor if you are also taking probenecid (Benemid). If you are using probenecid, you may not be able to use Zovirax, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
There may be other drugs that can affect Acyclovir. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Before using Trazodone, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use.
